  1. Brielle’s Choice

Brielle had been living in my house long enough to mistake its comforts for security. When agents arrived with subpoenas, she called Nolan repeatedly and received no answer. He was busy meeting attorneys of his own.

She contacted Daniel through a separate lawyer. She wanted to know whether she could be charged merely for living in the estate or accepting gifts. Daniel explained that he represented me, not her, and encouraged her to seek independent advice. She did.

A week later, her attorney offered investigators copies of messages from Nolan. The messages showed him discussing the timing of my arrest and joking that the house would soon be “properly ours.” One included a photograph of a bank document with a transfer instruction he had asked Brielle to sign as a witness. She said she had refused.

I was not ready to forgive her. She had posed for pictures in my bedroom while I waited for a prison transfer. But I could recognize the importance of her decision to speak.
