When Daniel told me Brielle was frightened for her baby, I looked at him sharply. “She chose Nolan.”
“She did. That doesn’t mean she knew everything.”
I remembered how easily Nolan had convinced me that his ambitions were harmless. It was possible Brielle had believed a different set of lies. Possible did not mean certain.
“Let investigators test what she says,” I replied. “I don’t want her protected because she’s pregnant. I don’t want her punished because I’m angry.”
Daniel nodded. “That’s fair.”
Later I learned Brielle had moved out of the estate. The house was still not mine to enter, but at least its rooms were no longer being used as trophies in someone else’s celebration.
- The Recorded Boast
The most unexpected evidence came from the detention center itself. During Nolan’s final visit, an officer had recorded an incident report after hearing him make remarks about Mara. The visitation room used audio monitoring, and investigators obtained the recording through the proper legal process.
