Elise called Daniel to ask whether I would speak with her. We arranged a monitored conversation. She thanked me for telling the prosecutor about the farm.

“I didn’t do it out of courage,” I admitted. “I was trying to save myself.”

“People can do the right thing for complicated reasons,” she said. “It still matters.”

I asked what Mara had been like as a child. Elise laughed softly and described a girl who built elaborate treasure maps and hid birthday gifts in the garden. Their mother used to complain that Mara could turn any room into a mystery.

“She would have hated being remembered only as a victim,” Elise said.

“Then tell me about the rest of her.”

We spoke for nearly an hour. When the call ended, I no longer pictured Mara as a photograph beside a porch. I pictured a whole person, stubborn and curious, whose family had waited too long for answers.
