My father looked up. “Say what?”
“That you think I’m a terrible husband.”
My father considered the pear in his hand. “I don’t know you well enough yet to decide what kind of husband you are.”
Grant laughed without any humor in it. “You know what happened.”
“I know what Vivian told me.”
“And?”
My father set the knife down. “I think you made a very poor decision.”
“That’s all?”
“No. I also think Vivian married you because she believed you were more than your worst decision. Whether she still believes that is something only she can answer.” He paused. “You should probably stop worrying about my opinion. Mine isn’t the one that matters here.”
That evening he asked me to walk with him. We left Micah with Grant and went to the small park two blocks from the house, where the daffodils were just starting to open.
