That evening, after everyone left, Grant and I drove home with Micah asleep in the back seat. A soft rain had started. Grant kept one hand on the wheel; the other rested on the console between us. I placed my hand over his.
“Do you ever think about that day?” he asked.
I knew exactly which day he meant. “Yes.”
“So do I.”
I watched the rain blur the streetlights outside my window.
“For a long time,” Grant said, “I wished I could just erase it.”
I turned toward him. “And now?”
“I don’t.”
That surprised me. “Why not?”
“Because if I erase it, I erase everything we learned afterward too.”
I considered that. “You could have learned all of it without abandoning me during labor.”
“Definitely.”
I smiled despite myself. “So it’s not going in the gratitude journal.”
“Good.”
He squeezed my hand. “But I don’t want to forget who I was capable of becoming that day. Not the version I want to be — the other one.”
