“That seems fair.”
We sat quietly for a while. Then he said, “I’m changing jobs.”
I turned toward him. “What?”
“I haven’t accepted anything yet.”
“Why now?”
He rested his forearms on his knees. “I’ve been thinking about the last year. I kept telling myself work was the reason I couldn’t make it to appointments. Then Mom needed help. Then the business needed help. There was always a reason waiting.”
I listened.
“I don’t want Micah growing up learning that love means whatever’s left over after everything else gets handled first.”
My throat tightened.
“There’s a compliance director opening at a smaller firm. Less money. Less travel.”
“Do you want it?”
“I think I do.”
“Don’t take it as an apology to me.”
He looked over. “That sounds like something your mother would say.”
“It sounds like something a forensic accountant would say.”
