“That means something.”
His fingers turned beneath mine. “It means everything.”
We walked the last block holding hands. Not reconciled. Not healed. But moving, for the first time in weeks, in the same direction.
When we got home, my father was in the living room with Micah asleep against his chest — the same exact image that had drained the color out of Grant’s face three weeks earlier. This time, Grant just smiled.
“Has he eaten?”
“Twice.”
“That seems physically impossible.”
“I may have exaggerated once.”
I lifted Micah out of his arms. My father stood, and something slipped out of his coat pocket as he rose.
An envelope. It landed face down on the rug.
I picked it up before he could reach it.
My name was written across the front, in handwriting I recognized instantly.
My mother’s.
I stopped breathing for a second.
“Dad?”
He looked at the envelope like it had appeared out of nowhere. “I found it two weeks ago.”
