His eyes dropped. “I know.”
It was the closest thing to an apology he’d offered yet.
So I asked the question that actually mattered. “Why didn’t you come?”
His fingers tightened around the blanket wrapped around Micah. “I thought there was time.”
“I told you the contractions were four minutes apart.”
“Mom said first babies take forever.”
“You laughed.”
His face tightened. “I know.”
“You told me to call a cab.”
“I know.”
“You stayed two more nights after that.”
That was the part I still couldn’t make sense of. The dinner itself had been bad enough. But after our son was born, while I slept, my father had texted Grant: Micah arrived safely. Mother and baby doing well. Four hours passed before Grant answered: Great. Tell Vivian I’ll call. He didn’t actually call until that evening, by which point Colette had apparently convinced the rest of the family I was “punishing” Grant by sleeping instead of taking a video call.
