My husband forgot the papers he needed for his business trip, so I drove to the airport to bring them to him — I thought I was simply saving his business speech until I got there and saw something I never expected.

I said nothing.

Tucker set the folder down.

“Lauren, I’m sorry.”

I pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.”

He hesitated before taking the seat opposite me.

“How long have you been seeing Emily?”

He rubbed his face.

“It’s complicated.”

“How long?”

“About eleven months.”

I swallowed.

“Is the baby yours?”

“Yes.”

“Were you planning to tell me?”

He looked away.

“Eventually.”

I leaned back.

“Eventually?”

“I was trying to find the right moment.”

“Before or after she gave birth?”

He didn’t answer.

I took the bank statements from beside me and pushed them across the table.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

“You tell me.”

He looked through the pages.

I watched him recognize the transactions.

“Hotels. Restaurants. Jewelry. Transfers. More than eleven thousand dollars, Tucker.”

He remained silent.

“How much of our savings did you spend on your relationship with Emily?”

“I was going to replace the money.”
