He reluctantly took my phone.
I crouched between the girls and smiled while Paige grabbed my hair.
Daniel took the picture.
Then his expression changed.
“I’ll take another.”
“Why?”
“You won’t like that one.”
He handed me the phone.
I looked at the photograph.
My hair was messy. I looked exhausted.
But my daughters were laughing.
“I like it.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Your face looks really puffy.”
I looked at him.
“Puffy?”
“And that shirt isn’t helping.”
I lowered the phone.
“Daniel, I had twins ten months ago.”
“I know.”
“When am I supposed to have time to look like I did before pregnancy?”
He sighed.
“When are you going back to the gym?”
I stared at him.
“Maybe when I’m not surviving on four hours of sleep.”
“They’re ten months old now.”
“I know how old our daughters are.”
He shrugged.
“You can’t use the pregnancy forever.”
That sentence stayed with me.
Later, he mentioned that his parents were taking everyone to a water park for their anniversary.
“Elliot and Jane are going,” he added.
Jane was twenty-five and worked as a fitness trainer. Daniel had mentioned more than once how fit she was.
I tried not to think about it.
