I was also recovering from a painful C-section.
Walking hurt.
Standing hurt.
Coughing hurt.
Even turning over in bed could make me wince.
But I had three babies who needed me.
And Ethan?
He decided he needed sleep.
The Guest Bedroom
On our first night home, Ethan announced that he was moving into the guest bedroom.
He said his job required concentration.
“I have important meetings every morning,” he explained.
“You can’t expect me to function on no sleep.”
I stared at him.
I had three babies.
I was recovering from major surgery.
I was pumping and feeding around the clock.
I was barely sleeping at all.
Yet somehow, Ethan believed his exhaustion mattered more.
I asked him to help during the night.
He sighed.
“I’ll help when I can.”
But “when I can” became “when it’s convenient.”
And convenient rarely arrived.
Most nights, I slept in fragments of twenty or forty minutes.
