My stomach tightened.
Apparently, Sophie had already known about Mia before taking the summer job. She had been asking about her during her first week at the resort.
When Sophie came downstairs, I confronted her.
“You knew Mia before you went there.”
She lowered her eyes.
“Why?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because of Dad.”
My husband Daniel had died five years earlier.
I couldn’t imagine what connection he could possibly have to a nineteen-year-old housekeeper.
“Who is Mia?”
Sophie hesitated.
“Her mother is Laura.”
The name stopped me cold.
I hadn’t heard Laura’s name in twenty years.
Laura had been the woman I discovered with Daniel during the early years of our marriage. I had been pregnant with Sophie at the time. I stayed, but only after demanding that Laura disappear from our lives completely.
We eventually moved away and rebuilt our marriage.
Or at least, I thought we had.
Now my daughter had somehow found her.
Sophie finally gave me Laura’s address.
The next morning, I drove there.
