My daughter called me almost every night that summer, yet somehow hid the one detail that actually mattered.
When I drove three hours to bring Sophie home from her summer job at a lakeside resort, I expected to find my nineteen-year-old daughter happy, independent, and ready for college.
Instead, she walked out of the employee dormitory carrying a newborn baby.
“Whose child is that?” I asked.
Sophie looked terrified.
“Mom… she’s mine now.”
My mind went completely blank.
The baby was only a few weeks old. Sophie had never mentioned a pregnancy, and I had spoken to her almost every night. How could she possibly have been hiding something this enormous?
Then I noticed something else.
Sophie wasn’t acting like someone who had stolen a baby or made a reckless decision. She was acting like someone protecting a person who was frightened and vulnerable.
