I came home from a business trip and found my SUV gone. My stepdaughter sat at the kitchen island and casually said, “Dad needed it more than you did.”

“She gave it to me. I didn’t know she forged anything.”

I pulled out my phone.

Then his recorded voice filled the room.

Your signature, buddy.

Followed by:

Unless you want to buy it back.

Then:

Forty. Consider it a family discount.

Derek lunged toward the phone.

Detective Hill stepped between us.

“Sit down.”

Derek froze.

For the first time since I’d known him, he looked small.

Rebecca explained that the attempted transfer had been flagged after my report. Derek had also contacted a dealership seeking a quick cash sale using fraudulent ownership documents.

Forgery.

Theft.

Attempted fraudulent sale.

Possession of stolen property.

Insurance fraud exposure if he attempted a claim.

Madison started crying.

“I didn’t know it was this serious.”

I looked at her.

“You forged my name.”

“Dad said you’d never press charges against family!”

Derek snapped, “Don’t drag me into this!”

Madison turned on him.

“You told me exactly how to sign it!”

Laura suddenly screamed, “Stop!”
