I came home from a business trip and found my SUV gone. My stepdaughter sat at the kitchen island and casually said, “Dad needed it more than you did.”

Derek stood.

“This is ridiculous. I own that vehicle.”

Rebecca placed a folder on the coffee table.

“No, Mr. Cole. You don’t.”

He pointed at Madison.

“I have a transfer signed by him!”

Detective Hill calmly opened his tablet.

“Would that be this signature?”

The television behind us came alive.

Security footage filled the screen.

Madison entered my office.

Opened the drawer.

Took the title.

Practiced my signature.

Once.

Twice.

Nine times.

Nobody spoke.

Then the footage showed her signing the transfer.

Madison’s face collapsed.

“Ethan…”

I raised one hand.

“No.”

Derek recovered first.
