When someone enters a room standing upright with their shoulders relaxed and their movements controlled, they may appear confident. Someone who frequently shifts their weight, crosses their legs, or keeps their body tense may appear nervous or uncomfortable.
But appearances can be misleading.
A person might stand differently because they are tired, have an injury, are uncomfortable in their shoes, or simply have a natural posture that differs from someone else’s.
That is why body language should always be interpreted in context.
The Connected Stance
One common standing position is having the legs relatively close together while the feet remain slightly separated.
Some people associate this posture with a calm or approachable appearance. A person standing this way may appear comfortable and relaxed, particularly when the rest of their body language is open.
But the stance itself cannot tell us whether someone is empathetic, loyal, romantic, shy, or outgoing.
