The Connected Stance
One common standing position is having the legs relatively close together while the feet remain slightly separated.
Some people associate this posture with a calm or approachable appearance. A person standing this way may appear comfortable and relaxed, particularly when the rest of their body language is open.
But the stance itself cannot tell us whether someone is empathetic, loyal, romantic, shy, or outgoing.
Those qualities are revealed through behavior over time—not through the position of someone’s legs.
A Wider Stance
Another familiar posture involves standing with the feet farther apart.
This position can create a stronger, more stable visual impression. People may naturally adopt it when they want to feel balanced, particularly while speaking in front of others or participating in a physical activity.
In certain social situations, a wider stance can also make a person appear more confident.
Still, context matters.
Someone standing with their feet apart may simply be comfortable that way. They may also be maintaining balance or adjusting their position without consciously communicating anything.
When Legs Cross While Standing
Crossing one leg over the other is another posture people sometimes try to interpret.
It can make a person appear relaxed or casual. In other circumstances, however, crossed legs may simply be a comfortable resting position.
There is no universal meaning.
Body language isn’t a dictionary in which one movement always corresponds to one emotion. The same gesture can have different meanings depending on the setting, the person’s habits, and what else their body is doing.
Looking Beyond One Physical Feature
If you want to understand someone’s body language, focusing on one physical characteristic can lead to inaccurate conclusions.
Instead, consider several signals together.
