My treatment wasn’t exceptional.
It was simply the latest.
Leonardo arrived shortly before dinner.
Mauricio shook his hand.
“So you’re the man who helped Margarita hide all this?”
Leonardo smiled.
“I helped her manage it. Nothing was hidden.”
“You don’t call fifty million dollars a secret?”
“No. A secret is something you owe someone and deliberately conceal. Margarita never owed anyone a financial report.”
I raised my glass.
“That’s why Armando trusted you.”
Felipe announced dinner.
We sat at one long table.
Nobody got a lesser chair because of clothing, occupation, or status.
Before eating, I stood.
Thirty-five faces turned toward me.
“Thank you for coming.”
Mauricio raised his glass.
“You made room for us.”
I looked down the table.
“That’s what I wanted to talk about.”
The room quieted.
“For too long, we let a few people decide who was appropriate enough, polished enough, successful enough, or convenient enough to belong.”
