The strange wood object in the agency – probably an old tool for mossing potatoes

What is a potato blast?

A potato shock is a hand tool used to squeeze boiled potatoes. Many people today recognize the potato blast as a handle with a metal plate, wire frames or holes in the bottom. Older models could instead be completely made of wood.

The wide end is the workspace. The handle provides a grip, and the user brings the tool upside down to push the soft potatoes. The design therefore does not need the engine, crank or moving parts.

Such a wooden shock can look unusually massive when lying alone on a kitchen counter. However, if you put it in the context of a saucepan with boiled potatoes, the shape becomes easier to understand. The large head distributes the pressure, while the narrower shaft is meant to be held in the hand.
