Throughout the meal, I noticed Daniel watching his mother with an intensity I hadn’t seen before. At one point, while I was carrying empty serving dishes back into the kitchen, I overheard him say a firm, low “Mom” to her across the table. But before he could elaborate, his uncle interrupted to ask a work-related question, and the moment slipped away.
Crossing the Line with a Child
When the bread basket came around the table for a second time, only a single warm roll remained. Clara reached out her small hand to take it.
Beatrice’s hand moved with startling speed.
It was a sharp, reflexive tap across Clara’s wrist—not violent enough to cause physical injury, but forceful enough to knock the roll directly out of her fingers and back into the basket.
For one disorienting second, I genuinely believed I must have misheard the situation.
Clara stared down at her hand, then looked up into her grandmother’s face. Beatrice offered the exact same narrow, patronizing smile she had directed at me for the past ten years.
