I read it twice.
Then a third time.
None of those things belonged to her.
I had paid for every piece.
I called immediately.
“Where is my furniture?” Furniture
Mia sounded almost cheerful.
“Relax. It’s safe.”
“You took it?”
“I moved it into storage.”
“That’s my property.”
“That couch was basically mine. I used it more than you.”
I stared at the empty room.
“That’s not how ownership works.”
She laughed.
“You actually think I stole from you?”
“Yes.”
“Whatever. At least now I have something to start over with.”
“Bring everything back.”
“No.”
She hung up.
Karen arrived around noon.
Instead of being horrified, she defended Mia.
“She took a few things she helped pick out.”
“I purchased them.”
“You threw her out.”
“That doesn’t transfer ownership.”
Karen rolled her eyes.
I stared at her.
“If Mia doesn’t return everything, I’m reporting it stolen.”
Her expression changed instantly.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Watch me.”
Then she smiled.
Cold.
Almost satisfied.
She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“There’s something you should probably see.”
She showed me a family group chat. Justicesystem resources
One I wasn’t included in.
My name appeared everywhere.
Mia had told our relatives that I screamed at her.
That I threw her out without warning.
That I frightened her.
That she no longer felt safe around me.
Then I saw Dad’s message.
If Thomas wants to act like this, maybe he doesn’t deserve to be part of this family.
My chest tightened.
Karen watched me read it.
Then she said quietly:
“See? This is what happens when you turn your back on family.” Justicesystem resources
She smiled.
“You end up alone.”
After she left, I sat on the floor where my couch used to be.
For several minutes, I felt hollow.
I had spent years doing everything they asked.
And somehow, the first time I said no, I became the villain.
Then something shifted.
Instead of asking how I could make them understand me, I asked a different question.
How do I protect myself?
I opened my laptop.
I saved everything.
Texts.
Screenshots.
Bank statements.
Furniture receipts. Furniture
Messages showing Mia had promised to move out.
Then my phone buzzed.
Mia sent a photo.
She was sitting on my couch with several friends, holding a glass of wine.
