“Steven?”
A pause.
Then:
“Victoria’s father?”
Steven nodded.
For the first time since I had entered the café, Christopher seemed unsure of himself.
“Sir, I think you’ve walked into the middle of a misunderstanding.”
Steven’s expression remained calm.
“I’ve been here long enough.”
“You didn’t hear everything.”
“I heard you insult an elderly woman’s dog while she was struggling to stay on her feet.”
Christopher glanced at me.
“I didn’t realize—”
Steven interrupted.
“That I was here?”
Christopher fell silent.
Steven looked around the café.
“I came in for coffee. I also came because my daughter has been talking about marrying you, and I thought it was time I met the man she intends to build a life with.”
So that was it.
Victoria was Christopher’s fiancée.
And Steven was her father.
Christopher looked at me again.
The difference in his face was almost unbelievable.
