Motives and Consequences
An audit of their financial situation later revealed that Grant was drowning in secret ruin, and the couple had stumbled upon an outdated copy of an old will. Convinced the estate was rightfully theirs, they had begun living as though they already owned it. The premature death announcement was a calculated stunt designed to buy them time to search the house for documents before I could get there and interfere.
Dad ultimately revamped his entire estate plan. He didn’t just disinherit Vanessa out of spite; instead, he stripped her and Grant of all emergency medical and financial authorizations, placing her future inheritance into a tightly managed trust that Grant could never touch. He told me he wasn’t interested in weaponizing money as punishment—he just wanted to ensure his eventual passing wouldn’t become another playground for their manipulation.
Months later, Vanessa finally showed up at Dad’s house alone, offering a tearful apology. He listened quietly, letting her talk herself out, and then asked her a single question:
“If Natalie had believed you that morning, how long were you planning to let her think I was dead?”
She had no answer.
Eventually, Dad and Vanessa began speaking again—cautiously, with a heavy wall of boundaries and zero pretense that the incident had never happened. Dad still drove out to visit me, still stole my bacon, and still complained about how weak my coffee was.
