My heart stopped.
I looked at Sophie.
She was crying silently.
“Sophie…”
She shook her head.
“I wanted to tell you.”
My voice barely came out.
“Tell me what?”
The doctor stepped back, giving us space.
Sophie finally looked at me.
“I was pregnant when we signed the divorce papers.”
The hallway disappeared around me.
“What?”
“I found out two weeks before we separated.”
I couldn’t move.
“You were pregnant?”
She nodded.
“I had already lost two babies, Ethan. When I found out I was pregnant again, I was terrified. I didn’t know whether to believe it was real.”
My eyes dropped to the ultrasound image again.
