First came recognition.
Then a sadness so deep that my chest began to ache.
“Sophie?”
She looked at the bracelet around her wrist.
Then her eyes returned to me.
“You shouldn’t be here, Ethan.”
“What happened?”
Her lips trembled.
For a moment, I thought she might cry.
Instead, she asked,
“Do you remember the last pregnancy we lost?”
My entire body turned cold.
“Of course I do.”
She grabbed the IV pole and struggled to get to her feet.
“There’s something I never told you.”
Before I could say anything else, the door behind her opened.
A doctor stepped into the hallway.
“Sophie,” he said, “you need to come back inside.”
Then he noticed me.
His expression changed.
“Are you Ethan?”
“Yes.”
The doctor glanced at Sophie.
“You never told him?”
Sophie closed her eyes.
My heart started pounding.
“Told me what?”
Silence.
Then the doctor handed her a medical file.
