He entered the study without waiting for an invitation.
“You’ve made a terrible mistake, Arthur.”
Arthur remained seated behind his desk.
“Have I?”
“You’ve taken private conversations and turned them into some ridiculous conspiracy.”
“I have records of financial transactions that require explanation.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You’re sixty-five years old. You should be enjoying your retirement, not imagining that everyone is trying to steal from you.”
Arthur opened a folder.
“Then you won’t object to having the records examined independently.”
Michael’s expression changed.
“Those documents don’t prove anything.”
“Then the review will settle the matter.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You owe me.”
Arthur looked up.
“For what?”
“For forty years of friendship!”
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“Friendship doesn’t entitle you to my assets.”
Michael slammed his hand on the desk.
“You married my daughter!”
“And I did so because I believed she loved me. I did not agree to become your financial solution.”
