I’m sorry.
Claire.
Arthur read the letter twice.
Then he folded it carefully and placed it inside a drawer.
He didn’t write back.
Some apologies arrive too late to restore what has been broken.
But he didn’t destroy the letter, either.
He hoped Claire would find a way to become someone who no longer needed to manipulate people to feel secure.
That hope wasn’t a promise of reconciliation.
It was simply a recognition that people could choose to change.
The legal proceedings continued, and Arthur allowed his attorneys to handle the remaining matters.
His marriage to Claire eventually ended.
He kept his financial affairs protected and returned to the life he had built before their relationship.
But something about him had changed.
He was more cautious.
He asked more questions.
And he no longer mistook affection for proof of honesty.
Most importantly, he stopped believing that being alone was the worst thing that could happen to him.
