Claire stood.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Arthur looked at the wedding photograph once more.
“I don’t know.”
She nodded.
For the first time, she appeared to understand that she could not force an answer from him.
Before leaving, she turned back.
“I’m sorry, Arthur.”
He watched her quietly.
“I’m sorry too, Claire.”
She looked surprised.
“For what?”
“For believing that loneliness was a reason to ignore the warning signs.”
It was the last conversation they had as husband and wife.
