I remembered believing those were the tears of a man who had chosen to love a child who wasn’t biologically his.
Now, standing in that hotel hallway, I noticed tears in Teresa’s eyes instead.
Teresa had cared for Leo since he was six weeks old, and she was the quietest, most dependable person in our household.
She never involved herself in my relationship, never repeated private conversations, and never questioned my decisions without a serious reason.
That afternoon, however, she looked absolutely terrified.
She held Leo against her shoulder, his tiny fingers curled around the collar of her pale blue uniform.
“Teresa, what’s wrong?”
She glanced toward the adjoining dressing room, where Adrian had been preparing for the ceremony.
“Mr. Hayes is on the phone, and he thinks you’re already downstairs.”
I frowned because Adrian had specifically requested privacy while getting ready.
“Why should that concern me?”
