I pictured Nolan laughing at my careful recordkeeping. He used to call me the family archivist. He said I never threw away a receipt. For the first time, that habit felt less like a personality quirk and more like a lifeline.

Three days later, a recovered page from Mara’s ledger reached Daniel. It showed a series of payments routed through Nolan’s former consulting firm into accounts linked to a company called Bellwether Services. The names were coded, but the transaction amounts were unmistakable. One column contained initials beside dates; another listed expenses for “site work” at the Kentucky property.

“This is not proof of murder,” Daniel cautioned.

“I know. But it is proof she had a reason to be frightened.”

The page also held a handwritten note: N. says the new investors will fix everything. Ask where the missing funds went.

Ortiz had recovered deleted messages from the old phone. One exchange showed Mara asking Nolan why his books contained transfers he could not explain. He replied that she was confusing routine financing with fraud. Another message, sent two days before she vanished, read: If you tell my mother, you will make this worse.
