“Home?” she asked.
I looked toward the road. The waterfront estate was still entangled in legal disputes. It was full of objects that had become evidence. I wasn’t ready.
“Somewhere quiet,” I said. “With a kitchen table.”
Mrs. Delaney smiled. “I know just the place.”
We drove away while cameras flashed behind us. I did not look back.

Authorities in Kentucky also charged him in connection with Mara’s killing. The proceedings moved separately, with different courts and different burdens of proof.
I attended portions of the hearings when my presence was requested. I did not enjoy seeing Nolan in custody. I had once loved the person he pretended to be. The man at the defense table looked smaller than the one who had ruled my life from behind glass.
