  1. The Price of Silence

The Kentucky investigation exposed a network of people who had seen pieces of the truth and decided not to ask questions. A contractor remembered the locked cabinet but assumed it held valuables. A neighbor noticed a late-night truck but thought it belonged to farm workers. An accountant had queried unexplained payments, then accepted Nolan’s explanation when his supervisor told him to stop.

None of these people was responsible for Nolan’s choices. Still, their small silences had created room for a larger one.

I recognized myself among them. I had ignored Celeste’s casual cruelty because challenging her exhausted me. I had dismissed warnings about Nolan’s promotions because I wanted our marriage to be an uncomplicated success. I had treated discomfort as the price of peace.

Daniel warned me not to turn that realization into self-blame. “You didn’t cause what happened.”

“I know. But I can learn from how I failed to see it.”
