“Did Dad know?” I asked quietly.

“We don’t know what he suspected.”

I remembered Walter asking me to review a vendor agreement the week before he became ill. I had promised to do it after a business trip. I never got the chance. Regret came in waves, and none of the new evidence made that particular wave any smaller.

  1. A Letter from Walter

Mrs. Delaney remembered the vendor agreement too. While gathering records, she found an envelope Walter had placed inside a folder marked Board Audit. It was addressed to me, dated six days before his death, and sealed with his familiar blue tape.

The letter was short. Walter wrote that he was troubled by unusual requests coming from Nolan’s office. He asked me to review the international vendor accounts personally and to speak with Helena before authorizing any changes. He ended with a sentence that made my throat close: You never have to choose between loving someone and asking them to tell you the truth.
