For the first time that morning, the tension in my shoulders began to ease.
The drive to the gathering was surprisingly pleasant. Daniel answered the kids’ curious questions about his work in regional theater with good humor, keeping the mood light.
When we pulled onto the street, however, my stomach tightened. Ryan’s truck was already parked in the driveway. Daniel noticed my sudden quietness, offering a steady look. “Ready?”
“Ready,” I took a deep breath and nodded.
The backyard was filled with familiar faces, summer decorations, and long-time family friends. Ryan’s mother, Elaine, greeted me warmly at the entrance. “Maggie, you look wonderful. I’m so glad you came.”
Before I could slip into my usual self-effacing response, Ryan walked over, gesturing toward Daniel. “Well, this is an unexpected surprise. Who is your guest?”
“Daniel,” he answered calmly, shaking Ryan’s hand. “Maggie’s partner for the day.”
Ryan paused, surprised, before offering a sharp chuckle. “Really?”
The old familiar feeling of awkwardness hovered for a moment, but Daniel stepped in smoothly. “Is surprising guests your standard welcome?”
Ryan adjusted his posture. “Just sharing a light moment.”
“Good communication always keeps things light,” Daniel replied easily, steering the conversation back toward the rest of the gathering.
Throughout the afternoon, Daniel fit seamlessly into the event. He helped Elaine bring out serving trays, chatted with family members, and kept an eye on the kids near the pool area—all without attempting to steal the spotlight.
