Part 1: The Measurement of Time……

He shrugged. “You became a mother, not an old woman. If you keep letting yourself go, eventually I’ll have no choice but to leave. You should respect your husband enough to stay beautiful for him.”

“I had a baby four months ago,” I said, my voice shaking. “I’m up half the night. I barely have time to eat.”

He sighed, sounding thoroughly irritated. “Claire, plenty of women have babies and get themselves back in shape. I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m being honest.”

That night, after he fell asleep, I locked myself in the bathroom and cried until my ribs ached. For the first time since marrying Ryan, I believed he might actually leave me.
Part 2: The 85-Pound Transformation

The next morning, before I could talk myself out of it, I put on my sneakers, strapped my daughter into her stroller, and started walking.

At first, walking was all I could manage. My legs ached after twenty minutes, and some days I hurried home in tears when the baby cried, feeling as though I had failed at something basic. But the next morning, I went out again.

Gradually, twenty minutes turned into an hour. After a few weeks, I added short bodyweight workouts while my daughter napped—squats beside the couch, core work on the living-room rug. I started planning my meals instead of surviving on crackers and whatever Ryan left in the fridge.

The scale moved slowly. Some weeks I lost two pounds; other weeks the number didn’t budge. Ryan made a point of tracking my progress like a trainer monitoring a client.

“Eleven pounds,” I told him one Saturday as I came out of the bathroom.

He smiled condescendingly. “See? Wasn’t so hard.”

When a week passed with no change, he’d just grunt, “Huh,” and go back to his phone.

Around the same time, Ryan started coming home later. “Work’s crazy,” he’d say. I believed him. His phone began spending every evening face down on the table, and he’d step into the hallway to take hushed calls. I accepted his excuses because I was desperate to fix our marriage.
