On my wedding night, I hid under the bed to surprise my husband. Instead, my mother-in-law walked in, put him on speaker, and asked, “She still has no idea?” Seconds later, I learned the shocking reason he had married me.

I looked down at my wedding ring.

“I need you to contact Fernanda Ibarra tomorrow.”

Silence.

Fernanda handled our family’s property matters.

“Did Rodrigo do something?”

“Not yet.”

I stared at the hotel room door.

“But he’s about to.”

I did not confront Rodrigo that night.

Twenty minutes later, he walked into the suite smiling.

He kissed my forehead and asked why my veil was damaged.

“I caught it on a chair,” I said.

He believed me.

I slept beside the man who had already planned to mortgage my apartment.

At 8:10 the next morning, while Rodrigo showered, I copied the recording to three separate places.

My email.

My father’s cloud account.

And Fernanda’s phone.

Then I reviewed every financial transfer related to the apartment.

By eleven o’clock, my father and Fernanda were waiting for me in an office on Reforma.

Fernanda listened to the entire recording without interrupting.

When it ended, she looked at me.

“Does Rodrigo have power of attorney over your assets?”

“No.”

“Have you signed any loan application?”

“No.”

“Anything authorizing a mortgage against the apartment?”

“Nothing.”

She finally relaxed.

“Good.”

She placed several bank statements on the table.

“What Rodrigo thinks he can do and what he can legally do are very different things.”

The money trail was obvious.

The 4.7 million pesos had originated from an account inherited from my grandmother.

From there, the funds temporarily moved through Rodrigo’s account.

Then they went to the seller.

“The transfers are documented,” Fernanda explained. “He cannot simply claim ownership because his account was used for the last transaction.”

My father had barely spoken.

Finally, he asked:

“Do you want out of this marriage today?”

I looked at my hands.

“Yes.”

Then I remembered the conversation I had overheard.

“But not yet.”

Fernanda lifted an eyebrow.

“What are you waiting for?”

“I want to know how far this goes.”
