For months, Maya had been secretly seeing him behind my back. I had suspected something was wrong, but I never imagined that one day she would actually walk away from our family.
That afternoon, she finally said the words that shattered everything.
“You can’t give me the life I want,” she told me. “But Harry can.”
I stood there silently, trying to understand how the woman I had married could say something like that while our children were only a few rooms away.
She continued without hesitation.
“He bought me a brand-new car. He took me to the Maldives. Do you understand the kind of life he gives me? The kind of life I deserve?”
I looked down at our baby girl sleeping peacefully against my chest.
Then I looked at Maya.
“You’re leaving them too?” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she closed her suitcase.
Then she walked out.
The door slammed behind her.
And for the next fifteen years, I raised our six daughters alone.
The Years That Followed
Those first few months were the hardest period of my life.
I had never imagined becoming a single father to six children overnight.
I had to learn everything.
How to prepare school lunches.
How to braid hair.
How to remove stains from dresses.
How to calm a child who was crying because she missed her mother.
How to balance work and school schedules.
