Rachel had never been someone who stayed quiet when she thought something was unfair.
As kids, she fought with teachers, coaches, our parents, and once, with a parking attendant who tried to charge us twice.
That Rachel would have grabbed the card back.
But this Rachel didn’t.
Then, without another word, she put her purse away.
I stared at her.
“What rules?”
Rachel looked at me immediately.
“Nothing,” she said quickly.
Too quickly.
David smiled.
“Rachel isn’t very responsible with money.”
His voice was calm. Almost playful.
Like we were discussing some harmless personality flaw.
I waited for Rachel to roll her eyes.
She didn’t.
She lowered them.
Something about the way she did it made my stomach turn.
I looked around the table.
Everyone suddenly seemed fascinated by their water glasses.
The waiter stood there awkwardly, holding the check folder.
David handed him a card.
“I’ve got it.”
