“I was lying.”
Rachel laughed so hard she covered her mouth.
For a few minutes, she looked exactly like the sister I remembered growing up with.
Relaxed.
Loud.
Completely herself.
Then dessert menus arrived.
Everyone started debating whether we had room for cake.
Rachel picked up her menu and smiled.
“I already know what I’m getting.”
David looked at her.
“The chocolate thing?”
“The chocolate thing,” she confirmed.
The waiter returned a minute later.
We ordered several desserts for the table.
Then Rachel quietly told the waiter:
“Dessert is on me.”
She reached into her purse and pulled out her credit card.
David’s hand immediately shot across the table.
He snatched it from her.
