Rachel stood silent for a long time.
Then something changed in her expression.
Not confidence exactly.
More like the beginning of it.
“I want my life back.”
I squeezed her hand.
“Then that’s what we’re going to work on.”
She breathed out.
“We?”
“Yes. We.”
Her mouth trembled.
“You don’t have to fix this.”
“I’m not fixing you.”
I paused.
“I’m standing next to you.”
For the first time since we entered the restroom, Rachel gave me a real smile.
Small, but real.
Then someone knocked on the door.
“Rachel?”
David.
Every muscle in her body tightened.
“You okay in there?”
Rachel looked at me.
Fear flashed across her face.
Then she straightened.
It was subtle.
But I saw it.
“I’m fine,” she called.
“Marissa in there too?”
Rachel kept her eyes on mine.
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
Then David answered.
“Everyone’s waiting.”
Rachel took one more breath.
“We’re coming.”
His footsteps moved away.
She opened her purse and checked that her wallet was still inside.
Then she looked at herself in the mirror.
“I’ve been telling everyone he treats me like a queen.”
I didn’t answer.
Rachel wiped beneath her eyes.
Then she gave a quiet, humorless laugh.
“A queen with no keys to her own castle.”
I reached for the door.
Before I opened it, Rachel stopped me.
“Marissa?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t say anything tonight.”
I nodded.
“I won’t.”
“But tomorrow?”
I looked at her.
“Tomorrow is yours.”
Rachel took my hand.
We walked back to the table together.
David looked up as we approached.
He smiled at Rachel as if nothing had happened.
For years, that smile had fooled me.
It didn’t anymore.
Rachel sat beside him.
This time, she didn’t lower her eyes.
And for the first time all night, David’s smile faded.
So here is the real question: When the person you trusted most turns love into control, do you keep protecting the picture everyone else believes in, or do you finally risk everything to take your life back?
