“I know.”
“This one’s for tonight.”
I stared at him. “Why?”
He lit the candles. “Because two years ago tonight, I made the worst decision of my life.”
I crossed my arms. “This celebration is heading in a strange direction.”
He smiled. “And you made one of the best decisions of yours.”
“What decision?”
“You called your dad.”
I looked at him.
“That brought him back into your life. Eventually it brought him into Micah’s. It brought your mother’s work back into yours too.” His voice softened. “And somehow, despite everything, it gave me a chance to actually become someone better.”
Emotion rose in my throat. “So this isn’t the anniversary of what you did.”
“It’s the anniversary of what you chose to do afterward.”
I looked at the cake. Then at Grant — still imperfect, still occasionally too eager to fix everything himself, still sometimes forgetting that honesty offered late is worth so much less than honesty offered early. But different. Meaningfully, measurably different.
