Grant walked up carrying Micah, who was wearing a tiny blue shirt and actively trying to remove one shoe.
“Your father and my mother are arguing about cake.”
“They’ve become friends.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Why not?”
“It only encourages them.”
Micah successfully pulled his shoe off. Grant caught it midair.
“Impressive.”
“He gets that from me.”
“The shoe removal?”
“The persistence.”
I smiled. Across the garden, my father had planted a small magnolia tree — my mother’s favorite — with a plaque set beneath it. After lunch, I walked over alone to read it.
Eleanor Faulkner Ashworth. Her dates. And underneath: Love leaves room for truth.
I stared at it for a long moment. My father came up quietly behind me.
“You used her letter.”
“One line of it.”
“You told me you never read it.”
“I didn’t.”
I turned around. He looked almost guilty. “She wrote that phrase somewhere else too.”
