Still, my instincts wouldn’t settle. Not because I expected a conspiracy — hidden financial relationships almost never look like one until somebody lines them up side by side.
I called Marcus. He answered on the second ring.
“Vivian?”
“Hi, Marcus.”
“Well, this is a surprise. Congratulations, by the way — your father sent a photo.”
I glanced at my father. He became very interested in his tea.
“Thank you.”
“How are you?”
“Tired.”
“That sounds about right.”
I smiled despite myself, then got to the point. “I’m looking at a commercial lease you approved last year. Harlow and Finch Hospitality.”
A pause. “I remember it.”
“Why?”
“The application was unusual. The guarantor’s financial profile was a lot stronger than the business itself.”
“Grant.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Grant was my husband.”
“I did.”
“And you knew Colette was his mother?”
Another pause, longer this time.
“No,” he said. “I recognized the name from your wedding, which made me ask legal whether there was a conflict of interest. They said no — you weren’t a party to the lease, and Grant wasn’t employed by Ashworth in any capacity.”
