When I looked back at Grant, his eyes were wet.
“I thought I could fix everything,” he said. “Mom’s business. The guarantee. Your pregnancy stress. Work. All of it.”
“By keeping me in the dark?”
“By carrying it myself.”
“That isn’t the same thing as protecting me, Grant.”
“I understand that now.”
“Do you?”
For once, he didn’t rush to defend himself. “I’m not sure,” he admitted, and somehow that surprised me more than anything else he’d said all day — maybe because it was the first thing all day that sounded completely honest.
I closed the folder. “Is there anything else?”
He hesitated. Too long.
My stomach tightened. “Grant.”
“There’s one more thing.”
He dragged both hands down his face. “Mom didn’t insist I stay at the dinner just because it was her birthday.”
I frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“The bank called her that afternoon.”
