My Fingertips Keep Splitting Open in the Cold — What Can I Do Now? (Doctor-Approved Home Care)

Cold weather, indoor heating, and frequent handwashing can weaken your skin’s protective barrier, allowing painful fingertip fissures to develop. Start with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat your hands dry. Immediately apply plain petroleum jelly or another thick, fragrance-free ointment, reapplying after washing. At bedtime, cotton gloves over the ointment can help keep it in place. Cover open splits with a clean, nonstick dressing, changing it daily or whenever wet or dirty.

Protection matters as much as moisturizing: wear warm gloves outdoors and waterproof gloves, ideally with cotton liners, for dishes and cleaning. Avoid picking at loose skin or putting household superglue into cracks. These measures can support healing, but persistent or recurring fissures may reflect eczema or another condition needing treatment. Seek prompt medical care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or fever. If cracks are deep, repeatedly bleeding, or not improving, arrange a medical assessment.
