My Ex-Mother-in-Law Used My Water Without Permission — Then the HOA Stepped In and the Situation Changed Completely

Rachel knew something was wrong when her summer water bill arrived at $212 instead of the usual $90. Her children were away visiting their grandmother, and Rachel was rarely home, so the increase made no sense. She checked every faucet, toilet, outdoor spigot, and even the yard, but found no leak or plumbing problem.

Then, one morning, Rachel heard something being dragged outside. Looking through her window, she saw her former mother-in-law, Diana, connecting a garden hose to Rachel’s outdoor faucet. The hose ran through the fence toward Diana’s property, where it reached her above-ground swimming pool.

Rachel confronted Diana, who casually admitted she had been using Rachel’s water because it was more convenient and saved money. She also admitted using it for her lawn. Rachel was shocked. Over the years, Diana had also used her trash bins and borrowed things without asking, always defending herself by saying, “We’re family.”

This time, Rachel decided not to let it go. She photographed the hose, saved her water bills, and compared her usage history. She estimated that about $122 of the unusually high bill came from Diana’s unauthorized use. Rather than arguing, Rachel began documenting everything and reviewing the neighborhood’s HOA rules.
