Dad stood beside the tub with a washcloth puppet balanced on his hand. Emily opened her eyes and burst into giggles as he gave it a squeaky voice. While she wasn’t looking, he had been inventing another character for their ongoing bath-time stories. That was the mystery: a small surprise, lovingly rehearsed. Seeing my expression, he lowered the puppet. I asked Emily to explain the game, and this time, with its silly hero in view, her words made sense.
Later, Dad and I spoke privately. I explained what Emily had told me and why the mention of secrecy had frightened me. He listened, then agreed: surprises could be fun, but she should never feel she had to hide anything from her parents. My relief was enormous, yet asking questions hadn’t been wrong. We kept the laughter and changed the language, making room for both a grandfather’s tenderness and a mother’s responsibility.
