My Daughter Moved to South Korea After Getting Married — Twelve Years Later, One Visit Changed Our Lives

I was 63 when I finally boarded a plane to South Korea, carrying twelve years of longing and a thousand unanswered questions in my heart. My daughter, Mary Lou, had moved there after marrying Kang Jun, an older man she had fallen in love with, leaving me alone in the American home where we had once shared everything. I had raised her by myself after losing my husband when she was still a child, working hard to give her a future and watching proudly as she became an independent woman. Although we stayed in touch through video calls and messages, seeing her face on a screen was never the same as having her beside me. She regularly sent money to help with my expenses, and relatives often reminded me how lucky I was to have such a thoughtful daughter. Still, every Christmas, I prepared her favorite meals and left an extra place at the table, quietly wishing that one day she would walk through my front door. Eventually, I decided I could no longer let distance determine how much of my daughter’s life I got to share.
