Chloe frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Susan pointed toward Wren.
“He would not be ashamed of her.”
She paused.
“He would be ashamed of you.”
The gym went silent.
Susan took a breath.
“When you were four years old, we were in a terrible accident. Our car went off the road. You were trapped in the back seat.”
Chloe’s expression changed.
“I couldn’t reach you,” Susan continued. “The car was smoking. I thought it was going to catch fire.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“That officer didn’t wait for backup.”
“He broke the window and pulled you out.”
Susan looked directly at the badge on Wren’s dress.
“I recognized that number the moment I saw it.”
Her voice broke.
“That man saved your life.”
