My daughter gasped, “Dad, help,” right before the call went completely dead. I tore down the highway at 100 mph, heading straight for her in-laws’ mansion.

I leaned closer.

Audrey’s eyes filled with tears. “One name kept coming up.”

“What name?”

She swallowed.

“Rose Thorne.”

I frowned. “Julian’s sister?”

Audrey shook her head slowly.

“His first wife.”

My breath caught.

“Julian told everyone she died overseas before we met. But one night, I found her picture in the basement. She had written something on the back.”

Audrey closed her eyes, trembling.

“What did it say?”

Her voice broke.

“If I vanish, ask Ethan Vale why.”

The room went silent except for the heart monitor.

My name.

On a photograph in the Thornes’ basement.

From a woman I had never met.
